Get Your Children Into Reading... And Enjoying It!

Monday, April 23, 2012
Reading is something considerably important in a child's life and development... in my personal opinion. It unleashes his imagination, awakens his mind to new horizons and challenges him intellectually. Bottom line, books can be a powerful tool for your kiddo. Though it's one thing to read to your child, but what about making him actually enjoy it?! Well, I came up with 10 ideas to make your little angel discover the simple joys of reading.

  • Take advantage of every opportunity to get your child to read... the TV guide, the cake recipe, traffic signs, etc.
  • Every evening, spend at least 10 minutes with your child reading. Even when your child knows how to, continue to read him stories. Better yet, read the first page, then he reads the following one, and so on and so forth.
  • Allow him an extra 10 to 15 minutes at bedtime to read in bed.
  • As a favor, ask him to read a story to his younger sibling. It will make him feel extremely proud!
  • Leave your child some cute little notes in his lunch box.
  • Purchase some books that pertain to your child's interests and passions, and let him read what he enjoys, even if that means comic books.
  • Subscribe your kid to a children magazine. He will be super excited to receive a surprise every month and will make him so pleased to get mail addressed to him. (Free Lego Club Magazine Subscription
  • Register your little one to the local library and turn it into a family outing.
  • Ask a relative to write to him by mail or email.
  • Play games that call for vocabulary skills, like for example Scrabble Junior and The Hangman.

Thanks for stopping by and visiting us at Mommy In Suburbia!

Another great way to get kids to read is to look up a company (I know there are a few, but I can't think of any right now) that do custom storybooks with your child's name in it. I remember ones that cast your child as a ballerina, or a baseball player, and had their friends or family in it too. Such a great way to make reading come alive for them.

Thanks for the tips! We love books in our house and I love the idea of putting little notes in kids' lunchboxes. How special that would make them feel. Vicky from www.messforless.net

In addition to reading with my kids almost every night, I do a weekly book fest where we take out a bunch of books, spread them all out on the floor and go through them all! We pick our favorites, read some immediately, and set aside some for future nights. The kids love it.

Thanks for the tips!
